A Guide To Building A Skincare Routine

The skincare routine order that matters most when you're starting from scratch.

Starting a skincare routine from scratch is much simpler than many ten-step routines make it seem. Focus on the essentials first, then gradually build from there.

The non-negotiables

  • Use a gentle cleanser every morning and evening.
  • Apply a moisturizer both morning and night.
  • Wear sunscreen every morning, regardless of the weather.

Add slowly from there

Once those three habits are firmly established, introduce only one active ingredient at a time. Use vitamin C in the morning or a retinoid at night, then wait at least two weeks before adding another product. Your skin needs time to show how it responds.

Most skincare routines don't fail because of the wrong products—they fail because people introduce too many products too quickly.
